Screen and Bad Hard Drives – Two Most Common Problems

Two of the most common repairs seen in Apple Stores or Apple Repair Shops are Macbook Pro screen repairs and hard drive failures. Laptop screens are prone to damage in a variety of ways from improper handling, dropping your MacBook, or closing the lid on an obstructive object. The screen may be the most delicate part of the MacBook and can be damaged easily. A small tumble off the counter for your MacBook can be the end of your hard drive and your data.  Fortunately, the cost of the Macbook Pro screen repairs are reasonable at an Authorized Apple Repair Center. Authorized Apple Repair Shops employ qualified technicians that have been trained properly to make changes to the Apple hardware and Macintosh operating system.  Apple Repair Centers are qualified to perform any MacBook related installation, upgrades and restoration of data required.

MacBook Air battery better than advertised a review of Macbook by :

MacBook Air battery better than advertised

When was the last time you purchased a piece of mobile electronics where the battery life exceeded the manufacturer’s claims? For me, the last time was April 3 and my iPad is still outperforming Apple’s 10-hour battery life claim. Add the MacBook Air to the list of portables that will meet or exceed your expectations.

We already know that 2010 MacBook Air benchmarks impress with Apple’s rebooted ultraportable besting the 13-inch MacBook Pro. But, what about battery life?

For AnandTech — always a thoughtful and thoroughgoing — the battery life story boils down to your usage model, even more so than with the MacBook Pro.

Light users are going to get wonderful battery life out of the new MacBook Air, particularly the 13-inch model. However, if you are the type of user who does a lot of multitasking or if you’re running particularly CPU intensive apps (e.g. Photoshop, iMovie, etc…) then these two notebooks will hardly last you.

I suspect this is the distinction Apple is looking to make. If you’re a regular user, just playing around on Gmail and browsing the web then the MacBook Air is all you’ll need. If you are doing any work with your machine however, you’ll want to look towards the MacBook Pro.

Around the time I bought an iPad, I also picked up a cheap Dell 10V, which is extremely easy to Hackintosh. This netbook just didn’t cut it as the keyboard layout was horrible, the trackpad abominable and the battery lasted less than two hours when multitasking heavily, and I quickly sold it.

That said, a wi-fi iPad is my current mobile and, although it’s doing the job well enough now, I’m really looking forward to iOS 4.2 (next month), which will bring multitasking.

To sum up…

As the reviews have shown, Apple’s MacBook Air is going to be greatly superior to any netbook both in terms of performance and battery life. Still, if you find yourself more than occasionally in Photoshop or other intensive apps (when away from electrical outlets), the MBA might not be the portable for you.

For everyone else, especially students and business types, the Late 2010 MacBook Air with its ultra-small footprint, relatively cool operation, light weight, pretty decent performance and, yes, long battery life is going to be a godsend…

What’s your take?

Advantages of Using a Laptop over a Desktop Computer a review of Desktop Computer by :

Advantages of Using a over a Desktop Computer

Choosing between a laptop and desktop can be a difficult decision. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, and your eventual purchasing decision is going to be based on these advantages when compared to your own personal needs. Many people are looking for a family computer; one that can be placed in a den or at a desk and become part of a large media center that all family members can utilize. For those people, a desktop computer may be the right choice. However, in today's fast-paced and portable world, many lifestyles and professions require a computer that can be used on-the-go, but still possess the qualities and capabilities of traditional desktop computers. In these cases, the advantages of using a laptop over a desktop computer become readily apparent.

Portability

The obvious advantage that laptops have over desktop computers is portability. If you carry a laptop with you, your applications and documents are always immediately available. With a card, your laptop can also access the Internet while on the go, so you have more places to do research, check your email, and be more productive.

These factors are critical in many professions, where someone could be expected to retrieve or send a file at a moment's notice. While desktop computers may still be favored by people who have no need for portability, it is now possible to purchase laptops that can serve just as adeptly as home PC's as desktops.

A great example is the Toshiba L555D Notebook, an affordable laptop that's quick and reliable regardless of the setting. This powerful notebook is wireless-ready, and includes a PC Health Monitor and a power-saving eco utility for efficient energy use. The L555D has one of the more powerful notebook processors in the AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core, which generates an impressive 2.2GHz; as well as a 3GB DDR2 SDRam memory and 320GB serial ATA hard drive. The 17.3" widescreen LCD monitor provides 1600 x 900 resolution, while the entire computer weighs in at a modest 6.99 pounds.

Size

Speaking of computer weight, another advantage of laptops is the limited amount of space they require to operate. An average laptop weighs between 4.5 and 8 pounds, while ultra light models can weigh in at about 3 pounds. Conversely, a standard desktop computer, including monitor and keyboard, can weigh around 25 pounds.

For many consumers, economizing space in a living area is very important, and sometimes a bulky desktop is simply not practical. This is an important factor, particularly among those who live in apartments and dormitories.

Q2 Design's 12.1″ Pentium Dual Core 2.0GHz Notebook is an ideal model for just such a scenario. This stylish notebook is powered by ’s Pentium Dual Core processor, which packs a speedy 2.0GHz. A Super-Multi DVD/CD RW drive allows users to easily transition between using CDs and DVDs. Complete with a 2GB DDR2 system memory, 250GB hard drive, and 12.1" LCD monitor, this notebook is small enough to fit anywhere, but still delivers large computer power.

Durability

In the past, critics of laptop computers argued that since laptops are portable, they are more prone to accidents and abuse than desktops. And due to their size, laptops required smaller, more intricate components and more tedious labor. While this may have been true in the past, laptop manufacturers have greatly improved durability concerns in their models. Additionally, processor companies such as AMD and Intel have begun to produce Core 2 Duo and Dual Core processors that can outperform desktops.

Such is the case with the versatile Q2 Designs 15.4″ Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz Notebook, which comes in a multitude of colors including fuchsia, jade, and midnight blue. This wide variety of colors, along with the power of Intel's Mobile Centrino technology make this model a stylish and desirable computer that delivers in terms of function and power too.

A 15.4″ WXGA Wide Screen LCD monitor provides a vivid picture, and the Windows Vista Premium Home Edition operating system is one of the most cutting-edge available. This lightweight, 7-pound model has an impressive 2GB DDR2 Memory and 120GB Hard Drive. This model, much like many of its laptop counterparts, comes with both a 56k modem and built-in wireless ready technology, facilitating instant portability and versatility when choosing an internet connection.

In short, desktops provide a generally less expensive, sometimes more powerful performance to meet your computing needs from a fixed location. However, laptops provide performance to meet your computing needs from virtually anywhere. Laptops cost roughly one-third more, but if you want to take advantage of the portability and increased productivity offered by laptops, then the extra expense may be worth it. In a world where work deadlines are constantly in flux, and board meetings can occur during a connector flight from Cleveland to Boise, choosing a laptop computer is becoming the more popular option every day.

How To Avoid Expensive Macbook Repairs a review of Macbook by :

How To Avoid Expensive Repairs

MacBook’s are popular computers and use of them as everyday laptops has increased over the years. Sales at Apple Stores of the MacBook Pro have grown every year. These machines, although high performance as laptops go, are still vulnerable to hardware failure.

The common problems are from simple damage, where the MacBook repair shop can exchange the defective part and get the machine up and running again in no time. Apple Stores and Apple retailers on the other hand, may take longer. Many Apple Stores will not take the repair at all, but send them on to a local Apple repair center.

MacBook Pro screen repairs are commonly requested at the Apple Stores. As with all laptop screens, they are delicate and easily damaged if not cared for properly. Another item that commonly needs to be replaced is the keyboard, due to liquid spills or other abuse. An Authorized MacBook repair shop can make repairs for all types of damage and have your laptop back in fully working order again with guaranteed workmanship.

The Apple MacBook Pro is not known for easy “do-it-yourself” service. Like many other modern laptop designs, one wrong move could cause enough damage to make a sting in your wallet. Not to mention, motherboard replacement for a laptop is not cheap!

MacBook repair costs can be avoided or reduced by:

Make sure necessary repairs are performed by an authorized MacBook or MacBook Pro repair service provider. Their work is guaranteed and you know it will be done right. Pay only once to repair it!

Get your MacBook repair done locally – When the Apple Store sends your machine away, it costs you money and you do not have personal contact with the MacBook repair/service provider. Local repairs can be more easily traced. You also can talk to an engineer about your MacBook and what you need, while getting advice at the same time. You may also receive a loaner until your MacBook is ready!
Keep your MacBook cool – overheating is a common way to damage the and reduces life. Do not block air vents where the fan blows hot air in the hinges.
Make sure your cables are organized before moving the MacBook – Moving the machine with an attached cable can put a lot of tension at the end of the cable/socket and causing expensive damage.
Do not put a pen or other objects on the surface of the laptop – closing the lid on the object can easily lead to broken hinges, keyboards and screen damage.

If you experience problems with your MacBook, take it to your local Apple Authorized repair center rather than the Apple Store.  Call on the expertise of certified Mac repair technicians and avoid the long lines at the Apple Stores. Why not take your computer directly to the place where Apple Stores send their most difficult MacBook Repairs?

An Overview of the New Macbooks and Macbook Pros

Posted: 08 Apr 2011 11:12 AM PDT

An Overview of the New and Macbook Pros

The new Macbooks and Macbook Pros represent a sizable change in ’s portable computing lineup. The biggest change is in the manufacturing process. Instead of polycarbonate, the Macbook is now crafted out of a CNC machined block of aluminum. The same goes for the Macbook Pro.

On the Macbook, this means you’ll have a lighter machine that’s also structurally more rigid. The Macbook Pro also uses this same manufacturing method. So instead of that flimsy, thin aluminum that dents rather easily, you get something much more substantial.

On both the regular Macbook and Macbook Pro, you get a glass trackpad. Gone is the click button. Instead, the whole trackpad becomes the click button. Because of this, you also get over 30% more trackpad real estate. Like the Macbook Air, various gestures can also be used with this trackpad.

The display has not been ignored. You get LED backlighting. Compared to the traditional backlighting (called compact fluorescents) LED backlighting is much brighter, gets to optimal brightness almost instantly, and is more consistent. This will make photographers and other people who depend on their displays very happy.

The display is surrounded in black and encased in a sheet of glass. Those who prefer a matte screen might find this annoying. But I didn’t find the glare to be all that distracting and in the end, the deeper/richer colors more than made up for it.

Nvidia powers the display for both Macbook models. Instead of Intel integrated graphics, the Macbook gets the Nvidia GeForce 9400M. The Macbook Pro gets a GeForce 9400M and a 9600M GT. Depending on the situation, the user can switch either graphics chips.

Macbook users will notice the biggest difference since the Intel graphics chips from the past generation offered so-so performance at best. Macbook Pro users should also see a performance boost in the 9600M GT but it’s still a far cry from the budget desktop SLI configurations that you can put together yourself.

One area where a lot of Macbook fans will complain loudly is the lack of firewire. People like firewire because it offers target disk mode, it uses less resources than USB 2.0, and some find it to be slightly faster than USB 2.0. Users will have to step up to a Macbook Pro if they want their firewire.

Instead of DVI, users will have to use DisplayPort. It’s much more compact and supports DVI and VGA connections. As of right now, there’s not a whole lot of industry support for DisplayPort.

Overall, the Macbook and Macbook Pro line has received a nice update. They both feel really solid and represent some of the finest notebooks available today. If you’re looking for a notebook that offers a lot of bang for the buck, look elsewhere. You can buy a similarly configured Dell notebook for hundreds less. They won’t have the really nice exterior casing, but the overall performance will be similar. But for those who prefer to use a Mac, this new line-up is hard to resist due to it’s improvements and overall refinement.

MacBook Pro MC024LL.Updated with Intel’s Core i5 processor a review of Macbook by :

Pro MC024LL.Updated with Intel’s Core i5 processor

MacBook Pro MC024LL updated with Intel’s Core i5 processor and next-generation NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics, the 17-inch Apple MacBook Pro is faster than ever and will keep you working longer away from power cords with an enhanced life of up to 9 hours of life.More info about MacBook Pro MC024LL

As with previous models, the new MacBook Pro features a precision unibody enclosure crafted from a single block of aluminum, creating a thin and light mobile computing workhorse (less than 1 inch thin and just 6.6 pounds) that’s also highly durable.

And it includes a 17-inch, LED-backlit glass (instead of an LCD panel) as well as a glass trackpad that doesn’t include a button (for larger tracking area) that features Apple’s Multi-Touch technology.

The MacBook Pro also offers excellent graphics flexibility with two video processors–the discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M processor (with 512 MB of GDDR3 video memory) for heavier workloads and an integrated Intel HD Graphics processor for better battery life on the go.

And the new automatic graphics switching feature determines which graphics processor an application needs and switches instantly the processors. It comes pre-loaded with Apple’s Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system–an operating system custom-designed for the advanced technology inside–and it also comes with the iLife ’09 suite of applications, including iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, and iTunes.

The new energy-efficient architecture in every MacBook Pro, along with automatic graphics switching, gives you dramatically longer battery life. On a single charge, the battery in the new 17-inch MacBook Pro lasts up to 8 to 9 hours.

And you’ll get up to 1000 full charge and discharge cycles–that’s nearly three times the lifespan of typical notebook batteries.

Advanced chemistry and Adaptive Charging allow the battery to maintain charging capabilities longer and determine the optimal way to charge the battery’s cells. Because the battery lasts up to five years, MacBook Pro uses just one battery in the same time a typical notebook uses three. That makes for less waste. And that, in turn, makes for one environmentally friendly battery.

What’s the difference between an LED and LCD screen in a MacBook Pro? a review of Macbook by :

Posted: 08 Apr 2011 07:48 AM PDT

What’s the difference between an LED and LCD screen in a MacBook Pro?

Good question – but actually, the first thing we need to clear up is the idea that your MacBook or MacBook Pro has an LED screen and not an LCD screen. The LED refers to just the backlight portion of your screen, not the entire screen itself. There is a common misconception that the current model MacBook and MacBook Pro do not use LCD screens.

So, what’s the deal? Well, before June of 2007, laptops used LCD screens that used a cold-cathode fluorescent lamp as a “backlight”. And why would these need this backlight in the first place? Another good question – you’re on a roll. LCD screens need a backlight, because the screens themselves (the liquid crystal display part) do not actually emit any light. In order to see what is on your screen, you need a special light, located behind the glass LCD screen, to brighten things up enough for you to view them. A common repair for MacBook and MacBook Pro systems is a damaged screen due to a fall that causes the backlight to stop working. You can usually tell if your backlight is damaged – turn on your MacBook or MacBook pro, or your PowerBook or iBook for that matter, and if your screen looks dark, but you can still see things on the screen when you shine a flashlight onto it, chances are your screen has a damaged or non-functional backlight.

During 2007, Apple (and a bunch of other companies) decided that CCFL backlights were evil and they had to go. They were full of mercury (bad), they used up to much power (bad) and they broke rather easily (very bad). So, enter stage right, the LED powered backlight in June of 2007. Since that time, all Apple laptops have used a backlit LCD screen that has an LED based backlight. This has helped increase battery run-times, increased reliability and helped the environment all at the same time. All good.

The Apple Certified Technicians at TechRestore still see LED backlit MacBook and MacBook Pro systems arriving daily for repair. Even though the LED is more reliable and less fragile than the CCFL, they still break when dropped enough. TechRestore customers often ask if just the backlight can be replaced on a LCD screen, and while it is true that you can replace just the backlight in many LCD panels, the parts and labor costs are not that much lower than replacing the entire screen. Plus, the vast majority of screens that come in also have additional damage, either to the LCD itself or to the screen housing on the MacBook or MacBook Pro.

TechRestore technicians perform MacBook and MacBook Pro screen on the same day they are received for our local customers and overnight for customers throughout the United States. Their award-winning technicians have mastered a proprietary “Factory-Fit” screen replacement process that insure that your new screen will look as good as new.
