How To Buy A MacBook On eBay : Six Tips to Avoid Being Scammed

How To Buy A MacBook On eBay : Six to Being Scammed

Buying a MacBook notebook on eBay is perfectly safe so long as you take care. Scammers frequently use laptops as bait for unwary buyers because they’re an expensive item. Luckily, 99.98 percent of sellers on eBay are honest but there’s always the rogue element you need to watch for. Here are six suggestions to help make your MacBook purchaseing experience a safe and happy one.

1 : Does it look like an amazing bargain?
They do exists but be wary of really cheap offers. Check out the seller. If they have a good reputation but have only sold budget articles in the past and this is their first MacBook sale, check them out. Too many eBay accounts get taken over every year and you might be dealing with a ‘phisher’ (someone who steals account usernames and passwords by fraud). If you’re doubtful, use the ‘Ask seller a question’ link – your email will go through to the real vendor. Sadly, if it seems too good to be true, the chances are it probably is.

2 : Does the seller have good feedback?
Check the seller’s feedback rating. Be suspicious of vendors with zero or low feedback and check to see how they got it. If it’s only for items they could be suspect. If they’ve sold expensive items before then they’re much more credible.

3 : Is the vendor genuine?
Don’t buy through auctions where the vendor tells you to use a free email service because they’re “having problems with their email”. Lots of eBay accounts get hijacked by phishers who trick people out of their account details and then use them to list fake deals. Payment is usually required through a non-eBay-approved channel. If you’re in doubt, email them through eBay’s ‘Ask seller a question’ feature – your email should go through to the genuine account owner.

4 : Is the photo of the actual item, or generic?
Generic photos are another fraud give-away. The majority of genuine sellers provide photos of the actual item for sale.

5 : Is the original receipt available?
Genuine sellers will be able to provide the original receipt. This is useful to prove ownership and also in case of hardware issues if the MacBook is still under guarantee.

6 : How is payment to be made?
Stay away from auctions that have unusual payment requirements. Pay by credit card or use PayPal as they offer an extra layer of protection in the event of a deal going bad.

To sum up:
Don’t buy on impulse or be seduced by an incredible deal. When in doubt, use the ‘Ask seller a question’ link. Do your research before you buy and you won’t be fooled.
