Apple Macbook Pro

Design

The 2011 13-inch MacBook Pro is virtually identical to its predecessor. Slim with its iconic curved lid, the aluminium unibody chassis exudes premium build quality from all angles. Measuring 12.8 x 8.9 x 1 inches, and weighing 4.6 pounds, the new machine has the same dimensions as before but is a fraction heavier (0.2 pounds). Of course, the 13-inch MacBook Air (0.7 inches thick, 2.9 pounds) makes the Pro look heavy by comparison, but this 13-incher still slips into bags easily and is relatively easy to carry.

Users will also find the same black Island-style keyboard and large multitouch touchpad that have graced previous models. Chiseled from a single block of metal, the MacBook Pro feels extremely sturdy. One drawback is that the MacBook Pro’s battery is not replaceable, at least not without Apple tech support. Also, the chassis can scratch easily if exposed to sharp objects, making a custom-fit cover a smart investment.

Heat

Despite its metallic construction, the MacBook Pro mainly kept its cool on our heat tests. After playing a Hulu video at full for 15 minutes, we measured a temperature of 90 degrees Fahrenheit at the center of the keyboard, while the notebook’s underside returned the same reading. The touchpad was cooler at 80 degrees. The bottom back end of the 13-inch MacBook Pro did get toasty, logging a temperature of 109 degrees; we consider anything over 100 degrees cause for concern.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Folks familiar with the MacBook Pro Laptop know that its keyboard is one of the best around. The laptop’s big square keys have a soft finish and are arranged in an island-style setup, offering plenty of spacing. They also make little sound when hit, yet provide a satisfying click. Equipped with an ambient light sensor, the keyboard is backlit as well, one of the advantages the 13-inch MacBook Pro has over the 13-inch Air.

Like MacBook Pros before it, the current version has a vast 4.1 x 3-inch touchpad that doubles as one massive button. Frankly, it’s the gold standard; it let us glide our fingers across it with minimal friction and intuitively press down to make selections. We never missed the lack of a discrete mouse button, or even two.

The full gamut of familiar multitouch gestures are here as well. We easily used two fingers to scroll up and down through webpages and zoom in and out of photos and documents. With four digits we pushed all windows out of the way for a clear view of the desktop, and with three fingers swiped our way from app to app.

and Audio

This MacBook Pro’s 13.3-inch display serves up a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, and it gets very bright. We wish, though, that it had the same 1440 x 900-pixel resolution as the 13-inch MacBook Air. While watching Hulu episodes of Fringe and 30 Rock, colors were pleasantly saturated with rich, deep blacks. Unfortunately, the screen’s glossy surface is prone to reflections, so viewing video in darker environments is advised. Viewing angles are also average, with image quality dropping off

as we tilted the display off-center forward or moved side to side.

Audio through the MacBook’s stereo speakers was definitely loud when playing “Living In America” by Dom using Slacker, but bass was certainly lacking. Even so, highs and vocals were clear and we found fidelity to be quite good.

Thunderbolt and Ports

New to the 13-inch MacBook Pro is Intel’s Thunderbolt technology, formerly known as Light Peak. Occupying the same physical connection as the DisplayPort (which now has a lightning bolt icon next to it), ThunderBolt offers a theoretical throughput speed of 10 Gbps. The port is also able to power peripherals such as external hard drives without the aid of an additional electricity source, since it can carry up to 10 watts of juice.

The new connection will also allow users to daisy-chain up to six devices, meaning you could connect a large monitor along with multiple high-speed hard drives. That’s sure to please video editors. No peripherals exist yet that use ThunderBolt, but products are expected to arrive this summer. Apple has demonstrated a 4.42GB folder being copied in about 10 seconds, a blazing data rate of 452.6 MBps.

Besides Thunderbolt, the 13-inch MacBook Pro’s port spread remains the same as on prior versions. Along the left edge are two USB ports, a fast FireWire 800 connection for quick system backups (using Time Machine), and an SD card slot. There’s also Ethernet, headphone, and slick magnetic power jack (called MagSafe), which will keep the MacBook Pro from flying off your desk if someone trips over the power cord. On the laptop’s left sits the slot-loading DVD burner and a Kensington lock slot.

FaceTime and HD Camera

Thanks to a new FaceTime HD camera, the new 13-inch MacBook Pro now supports 720p HD video calls. Couple the cam with a newly installed FaceTime app that first debuted on the iPhone 4, and you’ve got a powerful video chat tool. In our tests, we called someone who was using the new 15-inch MacBook Pro over FaceTime and noted bright, life-like colors. Image quality was also sharp and motion was smooth. Defaulting to portrait mode, FaceTime can be flipped over to landscape view or full screen. Keep in mind that the app will only transmit a hi-def video stream if hardware on the other end can handle it.

Apple has once again created a winning notebook. The 13-inch MacBook Pro is considerably faster than its predecessor yet lasts over 8 hours on a charge. We also like the new FaceTime HD camera and look forward to seeing Thunderbolt-enabled peripherals that take advantage of the new port. Gamers and other users who want more graphics power will want to look elsewhere. And the 13-inch MacBook Air offers a higher-resolution display in a much thinner and lighter package. But if you have a need for speed and epic endurance, the 13-inch MacBook Pro will definitely satisfy.

Opting For a Smith Typewriter- What You Need To Know

For a Smith Typewriter- What You Need To Know

Prior to 1889, the Smith Brothers had been concerned only with the manufacture of firearms; however, in that year, production of a double-keyboard standard typewriter was begun by this firm based upon the designs of a consulting engineer under contract to the firm.  The machine was quickly successful; this was the SMITH PREMIER. The machine was actually so well received that the four brothers set up a new company, Smith Premier Typewriter Co., to build it.  Shortly thereafter, in 1893, this company came under the umbrella of the Union Typewriter Company, which was a trust including Remington, Densmore, Yost and Caligraph — and one which would not be legal today, considering the anti-trust laws.  Business for all of them was booming, especially with the price fixing that the trust allowed. Before the end of the century, though, the new Underwood machine appeared which offered visible writing.  The Smith Brothers knew that this was eventually to be the way of the future, but were not permitted by the trust to produce a different machine that would have been directly competitive point-for-point with the Underwood.  They then decided that the old business, and the trust itself, were dead ends, but that visible typewriters were not.  They sold out their shares in the Smith Premier Typewriter Company and resigned. As we now know, the Smiths did not plan to leave the business — they planned to go head to head not only with Underwood, but with all of the Union companies.  They established a new company, L. C. Smith & Brothers Typewriters Inc., bought new land and built a brand new factory — in the same city, Syracuse, New York, as the Smith Premier factory.  By 1904, the new L. C. Smith & Bros. Standard was on the market, offering not only visible writing, but basket shift.  The success of the machine was augured both by the soundness of the design and the experience of the Smith Brothers. Ultimately, this company developed the typewriter brand Smith Corona. This Smith typewriter became one of the preeminent typewriter brands in the United States in the middle of the twentieth century.

Electric Smith typewriters were developed and sold beginning in 1955. These Smith typewriters were designed to be mobile typewriters. Before this, all Smith typewriters had been much heavier and designed for use in one place. The portable Smith typewriters were marketed for both business and home use. Typing became much more widespread with the availability of the Smith typewriter. More businesses relied on them and students began to use the Smith typewriters for schoolwork.

Smith typewriters utilized new technology as it became available. Smith typewriters developed the use of "typeballs" instead of the key strike method that had been popular. Smith typewriters also developed the concept of a paper roller, replacing the moving carriage. In these Smith typewriters, the carriage stayed in place while the typeball moved. Typeballs on Smith typewriters enabled the typist to change fonts and use characters not found on a traditional keyboard. Smith typewriters enabled the typist to produce high quality printed pages.

Smith typewriters also redesigned the keyboard typists used. The Smith typewriter keyboard was more ergonomic. The Smith typewriter used a standard QWERTY style keyboard. The Smith typewriters also used the standard typing ribbons, but ultimately transitioned to ribbon cartridges.

Smith typewriters were popular well into the 1980's, when the invention of the computer and word processing drew people away from the typewriter. Smith typewriters had a following of people who found typewriters easier to use than the newly created word processors. Smith typewriters developed some word processing abilities. Memory and dictionary functions were added. Smith typewriters remained popular with many people who found it frustrating to keep up with the every changing word processing technology. Smith typewriters were a much more affordable than the  expensive desktop computers available at the time.

Many people kept their attachment to Smith typewriters long after the word processing and computer era was in its prime.   Smith typewriters became almost a nostalgic item, bring memories to some of a simpler time. Some people took great satisfaction in un- mistakable note the Smith typewriter keys made when they struck the paper and the whirring sound the Smith typewriter would make when it turned on. Many people also found it satisfying to see the words on the paper as they typed on a Smith typewriter – much more satisfying than seeing the words on a computer screen.

Smith typewriters have a long and rich history in this country and have stood the test of time. Many people still use the Smith Typewriter to this day.

New Pro Review

New MacBook Pro Review

It always amazes me with tech news today, just how quickly technology advances aligned with the amount of new products and upgrades this generates.

I’m sure this year will be no different!

Early 2011, Apple released the New MacBook Pro laptop with the Intel Sandy Bridge processor.

The laptop range now comes in three sizes – 13-inch, 15 inch and 17 inch.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro laptop features a 2.3GHz Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5 processor or the fastest dual-core processor available – the 2.7GHz Intel Core i7.

With Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.4GHz, these processors allow the 13-inch laptop to perform up to twice as fast as the previous generation.

The 15- and 17-inch models bring quad-core power to almost everything you do. The available 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor – with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.4GHz and up to 8MB of shared L3 cache

For graphics-intensive applications, the 15- and 17-inch models automatically switch to new high-performance AMD Radeon graphics processors.

An energy-efficient processor architecture with an integrated video encoder, along with automatic graphics switching in the 15- and 17-inch models, all help improve battery life.

Every new MacBook Pro features a breakthrough, long-lasting battery that delivers up to 7 hours of wireless productivity on a single charge (8 hours on the 17-inch MacBook Pro) and can be recharged up to 1000 times. Nearly three times the lifespan of typical notebook batteries, and that’s with more powerful processors and faster graphics.

The hard disk sizes start at 320GB increasing to a 750GB 5400-rpm hard drive in the 17-inch model. Each MacBook Pro comes with 4GB (two 2GB SO-DIMMs) of 1333MHz DDR3 memory. The two SO-DIMM slots support up to 8GB.

The new models run on the familiar Mac OS X Snow Leopard operating system, with the included iLife package consisting of iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand. The new Mac OS X 10.7 Lion operating system is due to be released in the Summer 2011.

The SD slot is now a SDXC card slot on the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro models. It supports up to 64GB cards with an ExpressCard/34 slot on the 17-inch MacBook Pro laptop.

Also included with the new MacBook Pro is the exciting new Thunderbolt technology. Allowing you to daisy chain up to six devices including displays, it can transfer data at up to 10Gbps. That’s twice as fast as USB 3.0.

You can find out more about the new Thunderbolt Technology at http://www.thunderboltexternalharddrive.com

In addition there is a Firewire port, two USB 2.0 ports (three on 17-inch) and a Gigabit Ethernet port. Wireless networking is based on the 802.11n WiFi specification and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.

Apple’s made very few external changes to the previous Macbook Pro laptop design, many would argue that they don’t need to. This along with the impressive specification makes the new range very appealing.

Just a shame there is no USB 3.0 port or blu-ray drive, plus it’s a bit expensive, still we all know that life isn’t prefect!

How to Add Mp4 Videos Onto Your Flv (flash) Video Site for Free

Posted: 17 May 2011 03:44 AM PDT

How to Add Mp4 Onto Your Flv (flash) Video Site for Free

I will start by stating what is required for this to work for you.  Any website containing videos in a flash format (typically ending in .flv) that can be accessed via FTP (file transfer protocol) hosted on a machine with PHP scripting capability.  This covers the majority of the linux/ webhosting out there that let you install or add on a pre-made video script such as PHP-motion. The second prerequisite a desktop computer running windows XP or Vista that has a cable / DSL internet connection.

If you are using windows hosting I don’t know if this will work.  If it is windows hosting that also has PHP it might work but that has never been tested.

The primary focus of this article will deal with how I did this on my site http://www.funnyvideoguy.com and hopefully it will get you started if you wish to do the same.

A basic overview of how it will work is this:

1) The original videos in FLV format reside on the server in whatever directory the video script uploads them into when they are added to your site. DCU (Download, Upload, Convert) software connects to the server via FTP and compares the files on the server to determine which of the original videos in FLV format have a file of the same name in MP4 format. For example if the video filename is 1.flv it checks to see if 1.mp4 exists.

2) If 1.mp4 does not exist download a copy of the original 1.flv file and convert it into 1.mp4

3) Upload the newly converted 1.mp4 back up to the server.

To make this happen the first thing to do is get DCU (Download, Convert, Upload) software for free FVG software by right-clicking then choosing ‘Save Link As’ on the following link

http://www.fvgsoftware.com/DCU/DCU.msi

Once, the file has finished downloading double click it or right-click then choose install to install it.

When installation has completed start DCU from the start menu or the icon on your desktop. Enter your ftp server info into the boxes at the top and click the TEST button to check if the connection is working.

If you have any problems with this login to your webhosting account/control panel and look for an FTP option there. Info for connecting via FTP client should be there somewhere.  This info will include server name, something like ftp.your-host-name.com, port number 21 and username and password.

Once that the FTP connection is working select both radio buttons labeled ‘Remote Directory via FTP’ under ‘Get files to convert from:’ and ‘Put converted files into:’ The textbox below the radio buttons should both contain a forword slash ‘/’ indicating the root directory of your ftp account.  Then, find the directory the original video files are located in, for my installation of PHPmotion script the location of the original video files is in /public_html/uploads. To move up and down in the directories on the server double-click on the directory names shown in the listbox.  The names in bold are directory names and the non-bold are the files in the current directory. Use the double dots ‘..’ to move back up a directory.  Once you find the directory the original files are located in and you have choosen the output directory I recommend using the same directory in which the original files are stored.

The listbox in the lower-left shows the files that need to be downloaded, converted, and uploaded. And, the listbox on the lower-right is a log of converted files.

All that is left is to click the ‘Convert Files’ button to get the converting of files underway.

Ok, one more thing is needed for this to work out well. In the template folder edit the play.php file but by adding this code to the code.

$ download_url = “Sorry, No MP4 is available for this video.” ;

$ newname = ‘uploads/’ . $ result["video_id"] . ‘.mp4′ ;

if (file_exists($ newname)) { $ download_url = “Right-click to download this in MP4 format” ;

and put it in just before this bit of code.

//get members personal information

$ sql = “SELECT * FROM member_profile WHERE user_id = $ member_id”;

$ query = @mysql_query($ sql);

@$ result = @mysql_fetch_array($ query);

$ member_username = $ result["user_name"];
