| The FastMac TruePower 17 Macbook Pro Battery Posted: 28 Mar 2011 11:09 AM PDT The FastMac TruePower 17 Macbook Pro Battery FastMac’s TruePower 17″ Macbook Pro Battery offer a runtime that is nearly the same as Apple’s own battery and good looks, but it’s considerably less expensive. The only cosmetic difference between Apple’s battery and the FastMac battery is that the underside of the FastMac model is plastic, as opposed to metal, and it has FastMac’s information. The battery seems to be identical to Apple’s after it has been installed. The aluminum exterior is the same as the Macbook Pro, and the battery has the same style of LED gauge that Apple uses to tell how much charge there is left. The button to activate that gauge ids identical, but it feels somewhat different. As opposed to Apple’s soft touch it has more of a hard click to it. TruePower is the circuitry inside of the battery. It uses an integrated circuit and sensors to prevent an overload or short circuiting which can result in swelling of the individual cells. While Apple has recalled the 15″ Macbook Pro batteries with that particular problem, it can happen to this battery as well. This problem usually won’t happen with the Apple battery for over a year. There is no indication that it won’t happen with the FastMac battery, but the TruePower information says that it won’t. FastMac refers to the 17″ Macbook Pro battery as an extended life, high capacity battery that sounds like the battery will last longer than the Apple battery but it won’t. While some of FastMac’s replacement batteries for the Macbook Pro will hold considerably more charge than Apple’s standard batteries, this isn’t one of them. Tests of the TruePower battery show that it will hold 6669 milliamp hours (mAh) of charge, as compared to 6800 for a new Apple battery. That’s a fairly small amount of difference in runtime. Therefore, if you’re replacing a battery that you’ve had since your Macbook Pro was new and you’ve had it for any amount of time, the chances are that you’ll see an increase in runtime, but only because you’re trading an old battery for a new one since batteries lose their charge capacity as they get older. If you compare FastMac’s TruePower battery to a new Apple replacement that you’d purchase at an Apple Store, you won’t see much of a difference either way. In the end, what makes FastMac’s 17″ Macbook Pro battery worth considering is what it costs. It is less expensive than what Apple charges, and it works just as well. Making my life more complicated I decided to sell it on eBay. Having a little experience with eBay auctions I prepared my listing. Looking at completed listings I was hoping to get more money on my used computer. But I didn’t know that selling a laptop is much more difficult than selling a toy for . Businesses selling laptops on eBay professionally make it impossible for individual sellers to succeed. I tried relisting my MabBook three times and every time my auction ended with a fake bid. They either end the listing right away using Buy It Now option or wait till the end and bid higher than anybody else. They never pay nor respond to e-mails. That was a waste of time and money that I spend on the listings.
Other idea I had after eBay was selling my laptop locally by advertising on Craigslist. Once again just like on eBay people selling similar merchandise make selling nearly impossible. After posting my first ads I didn’t get any response. As I found out someone flagged my posts to reduce competition and increase chance of selling his laptop. Craigslist doesn’t track IP addresses so one person can flag post several times till it’s removed. Finally when my add was seen by people I started receiving e-mails and phone calls with low cash offer. I didn’t get any offer as high as at www.laptoptraderexpress.com
I went back to that website after couple of weeks since I found it first time. You can save this time by not making my mistakes.
